Our mission

Youth Literacy Quebec is a non-profit organization that makes the joy of reading the driving force behind its commitment. Its mission is to instill in young people a love of reading and to build, from an early age, a positive and lasting connection with books. By facilitating access to reading and strengthening literacy skills, the organization contributes to equal opportunities while supporting educational success, making reading a vibrant, meaningful, and enriching experience.

Our Approach

To achieve this, Youth Literacy Quebec develops inspiring programs, structuring projects, accessible educational tools, and awareness activities for families, schools, and communities. Through a playful approach, accessible to everyone and rooted in the everyday lives of young people, the organization fosters a love of reading, supports the development of reading skills, and guides young people in their learning and academic journey. Working closely with stakeholders in the education sector and families, Youth Literacy Quebec promotes innovation, civic engagement, and collective action around a common goal: paving the way to educational success.

Educational values

Youth Literacy Quebec places education and reading at the heart of its mission. The organization promotes the development of a positive and lasting relationship with reading, as well as the adoption of regular practices that foster autonomy, motivation, perseverance, and self-discipline in young people. It supports the development of literacy, vocabulary, and comprehension, while also contributing to cognitive development, including attention, memory, and critical thinking.

Guided by an inclusive approach, Youth Literacy Quebec advocates for equal opportunities and the reduction of inequalities related to socioeconomic background. The organization recognizes the diversity of young people, including those with special needs, and encourages intellectual curiosity, openness to the world, and a love of learning, thus contributing to a positive relationship with school.

Civic values

From a civic perspective, Youth Literacy Quebec promotes equitable access to knowledge and participation in a shared culture through books. The organization is part of a collective and mobilizing approach, fostering closer ties between families, schools, and communities.

Youth Literacy Quebec, we believe that reading helps children grow and become independent. Reading, speaking, and writing help structure thought, ask questions, and share ideas. Words help us understand the world, imagine new things, and express ourselves better with others. By instilling in children a love of reading and playing with language, we help them think for themselves, listen to others, and find their place in everyday life. Reading is learning to become a curious, respectful, and engaged citizen.

By promoting reading, education and individual responsibility within a collective project, Youth Literacy Quebec contributes to building a more educated, more engaged and freer society, while participating in strengthening the democratic vitality of Quebec society.
